We’ve made a few changes to make us more agile
It’s December, y’all.
At DFWSEM that means Board election time.
With 2015 almost behind us and accolades still rolling in from a stellar State of Search effort, we’re gearing up for Board Election Night on Wednesday, December 9. This is your opportunity to participate in the election of our 2016 Board of Directors. This year, after careful deliberation, the current Board has made some changes to the By Laws and election process. So, since things will work a little differently this year, we want to describe the process for all our members.
The Board of Directors has been set at twenty members for the last few years. The decision was made to grow the board this way because we wanted to take advantage of the willingness of members to volunteer their time. However, in practice, the size of the Board has presented significant challenges. With so many members, it became apparent we lack the ability to be nimble, and to make decisions in a timely manner.
After much discussion, it was decided that we need to begin reducing the size of the board. To offset the impact of the reduction on getting things done, we’ve implemented a strategy to create even more volunteer opportunities for members. This new strategy will also help us better assess members’ willingness and capabilities, build skills, and mentor those who wish to serve on the Board in the future.
For 2016, fifteen directors will be elected to the Board. We will evaluate the reduction in numbers during the year, and propose to move to nine directors in 2017 if the Board agrees reducing seats was a wise decision. We have also implemented a new requirement that candidates for Board of Directors in 2016 and beyond must have been participating DFWSEM members, through individual or corporate membership, for at least a year.
On December 9, nominations will first be accepted from all qualified applicants. The name of each nominee will be placed on a ballot. Our By Laws direct that current Board members must evaluate and elect the incoming Board. Once nominations have closed, each of the current 2015 board members will vote for 15 candidates on their ballot. Votes will be tallied, and the fifteen candidates with the highest number of votes will be elected to the 2016 Board. The new board will then convene to elect its officers.
The Board will also form committees to handle DFWSEM business – these will include specific portfolio areas like Membership, Communications, State of Search, Programming, etc. A Board member will chair each committee – and committees will be open to volunteers from within the DFWSEM membership. Chairpersons may even approach you to serve on a committee if they need your skills! This committee structure will create many new opportunities to serve the association.
Again, these volunteer roles will give Board members insight into individuals’ skills and abilities, and how well they perform for the association. Volunteer participation on a committee or subcommittee will be a prerequisite of new candidates for Director starting with the 2017 Board – this will be in addition to the 1 year membership requirement. Of course Board membership counts, as well. We unanimously believe the changes will make our Board better by vetting candidates for willingness to work hard for the association.
So what does it all mean? If you want to be a DFWSEM Director in 2016, and you meet the requirements, you may come to Noah’s Event Center on Wednesday, December 9 at 7 p.m and run for an open position! If you are not ready to serve on the Board, that’s OK too. Everyone is welcome, and we encourage you to volunteer for committee assignments and help us keep DFWSEM evolving and thriving.
